Rijkswaterstaat
Haarlem, Netherlands
When a former FIOD building in Haarlem, the Netherlands, began its transformation into a modern and sustainable office for Rijkswaterstaat, it quickly became clear that this was more than a conventional renovation. The project was guided by a strong commitment to circularity: over 95% of the building materials were reused, while much of the existing furniture was carefully retained and upgraded rather than replaced. Resources were kept in circulation, shaping a building that reflects a thoughtful and responsible approach to both environmental impact and everyday working life.
Within this transformation, an overlooked rooftop terrace emerged as a quiet opportunity. Once underutilised, it held the potential to become something more — a place to pause, meet, and share ideas. Reimagined as a flexible meeting space, the terrace invites informal gatherings and spontaneous conversations. By making space for informal meetings and everyday interactions, the design helps strengthen connections and supports a more dynamic and social working environment.

The Loop series in the recycled version is Swan-labelled, and the material consists of 100% recycled polyethylene made from residual waste and production surplus. Choosing Loop Recycled supports the project’s overall ambition to keep resources in circulation and to take a long-term perspective. In this context, sustainability is not only about the material itself, but equally about durability, robustness, and everyday use.
